Role - Lead Data Scientist

ABOUT LITTLE PLACE LABS

Little Place Labs is a space technology (SpaceTech) startup with a vision of making satellites and space robots intelligent, autonomous and decentralised as we enter into the new era of commercially exploiting space derived insights and resources.

Our initial mission is to develop space-based data processing capabilities for various Earth Observation (EO) applications. We aim to make satellites smarter by enabling satellite edge computing and machine learning in orbit to generate near real-time insights for objects and events of interest on the ground such as wildfires, floods, surveillance and other finance applications.

Our rapidly growing team of mission-driven, space enthusiasts is passionate, innovative, and committed to a better future for planet Earth, the little place that we all call home.

POSITION SUMMARY

For candidates based in the US or UK only.

As the LEAD DATA SCIENTIST heading the Data Science Team and reporting to the CTO, you will lead the development of the LPL’s space data analytics product Orbitfy from scratch, explore different use cases for the technology and work closely to strategise the product and company's roadmap for the next 3-4 years.

Little Place Lab's data science team is the heart and the brain of our product development offering space derived analytics as the source of truth for key stakeholders to make critical and timely decisions.

You will work closely with the CTO alongside machine learning engineers, data scientists and interns to apply sophisticated modelling techniques on a modern data stack and build the future of Space edge Computing.

This is a remote position, with some occasional travel to locations within the US and UK.

  • Act as LPL’s expert in AI/ML discussions when working with customers and partners.

  • Work as well as guide data science engineers with multispectral and hyperspectral data to build ML models - using CNN from scratch as well as using pre-trained models.

  • Design, architect, manage, guide and work on undertaking preprocessing of data as well as building of computer vision models and machine-learning algorithms

  • Team-oriented development: further build and nurture the data science team

  • Communicate with technical and non-technical audiences and translate between the domains of business problems and implementations

  • Assess and improve the performance of ML Models

  • Identify valuable data sources (e.g. various satellite imagery datasets) and automate collection processes

  • Formulate data visualisation techniques to communicate complex topics in approachable ways

  • 80% of time focused on LPL defined tasks + 20% time working on self exploratory projects

SUCCESS METRICS

  • Manage the delivery drops of the Orbitfy application (preprocessing part + ML part) for chosen use cases in time for satellite launch or user testing.

  • Mentor and manage the data science team.

  • Contribute to supporting tech strategy and product roadmap.

  • Supporting business development activities

DESIRED TRAITS

  • Educational - Holds an advanced degree in Data Science and/or extensive experience of working in Data Science for big and small organisations.

  • Technical - Solid experience of data science tools and techniques across a range of algorithms especially in Computer Vision
